SLITTING
Slitting enables a coil to be cut to a width requirement of your choosing with the tolerances listed below. Lead times of 2-5 days.
Carbon: Thickness – 0.40 to 4.00mm
Width – Up to 1500mm
Aluminium: Thickness – 0.6 to 4.00mm
Stainless: Thickness – 0.55 to 3.00mm
RECOILING
Recoiling enables a coil to be separated into smaller coils at any weight you desire. A coil can be both recoiled and slit at the same time.
The tolerances are the same as slitting listed above. Lead times of 2-5 days.
What Is Coil Slitting?
Coil slitting is the process of cutting wide steel coils into narrower coils based on the customer’s required widths. This is done using a specialized slitting machine, which precisely slices the material without compromising structural quality.
The resulting narrow coils — called “slit coils” — are then rewound and prepared for further use or delivery.
The Coil Slitting Process
Loading the Master Coil
The process begins by loading a master coil onto an uncoiler. This large roll of steel is typically several tonnes in weight and may span over a metre in width.
Threading Through the Slitter
Once in place, the coil is threaded through the slitter head. This machine is equipped with a series of blades, which are spaced according to the specified slit widths. These blades are extremely sharp and aligned with high precision.
Slitting the Coil
As the coil feeds through, the knives slice the material lengthwise into the desired widths. Each slit is accurate to millimetres, ensuring minimal waste and consistent sizing.
Tensioning and Recoiling
After slitting, the narrower strips are guided onto a recoiler. Here, they are rewound into individual slit coils under consistent tension, ensuring clean edges and tight, even winding.
Packaging and Labelling
Each finished coil is weighed, labelled, and securely packaged to protect the material during transport. Slit coils are often stacked or palletised depending on customer preferences.
Benefits of Using a Coil Slitting Service
- Custom sizing: Receive material in the exact widths needed for your operations.
- Reduced waste.
- Streamlined production: Pre-slit coils are easier to handle and feed into your machinery.
Who Uses Coil Slitting Services?
